How to Get Along with Me

  • Be independent, not clingy.
  • Speak in a straightforward and brief manner.
  • I need time alone to process my feelings and thoughts.
  • Remember that If I seem aloof, distant, or arrogant, it may be that I am feeling uncomfortable.
  • Make me feel welcome, but not too intensely, or I might doubt your sincerity.
  • If I become irritated when I have to repeat things, it may be because it was such an effort to get my thoughts out in the first place.
  • don’t come on like a bulldozer.
  • Help me to avoid my pet peeves: big parties, other people’s loud music, overdone emotions, and intrusions on my privacy.

What’s Hard About Being a FIVE

  • being slow to put my knowledge and insights out in the world

FIVEs as Children Often

so, I passed my math exam (I think)

I got back my math exam. I passed. barely. I think. I did manage to get over the 50.2% average the class had. I would be surprised if the average for our section was that high.

Apparently I don’t know how to calculate derivatives of trigonometric functions. which is sad. I had memorized the logarithmic functions because that is where I had problems on the first exam.

I feel bad for memorizing things.

I get my English essay back Thursday. then get to memorize a bunch of literary terms I well never need to know so that I may pass that exam.

    yay.

so not failing anything yet. I should get on that.

    Studying (is) For Dummies.

Studying is wrong. It is rather simple if you think about it.

In our economics class the teach showed us a video where a study was done where economic students were tested after completing an economics course. They found that the average retention was pretty much nothing.

So really what was the point?

It is my learned opinion that It far better to never study. For one simple reason. You know what you know. Studying has a nasty habit of shoving things into your short term memory, and although the information is probably still there somewhere 50 years down the line it is next to impossible for the average person to actively remember information that was absorbed through such methods. Sure you will pass the test. You may even excel in the class. But it is highly unlikely you actually know what you are doing.

But think about it, really. All studying can do and ever will do, is memorize things. Things you memorize, are rarely ever actually memorized.

Please note that I don't really consider doing assignments studying. And infact doing the assignments and suggested problems (or what have you) is probably the only true way for real knowledge retention.

Which of course makes many classes rather pointless. For instance my English and my Economics classes have few assignments. So to pass, all one really has to do is memorize a bunch of garbage, write the exam, then forget everything.

So, why did you take the class?

The act of not studying also gives you a much better representation of your abilities to accomplish the task at hand. In real life, you may have reference books at your disposal, but you do need to know what you are looking for. If you were to write an exam with no prior preparation you would get a better idea of what you truly know.

I don't know about you, but if I hired someone who had to break out their calculus text book every time they had to do something, I probably would be wishing I had not hired them.

I have seen a lot of people pass things they really should never have passed. I have worked with them, I have attended classes with them. they studied. I would not hire them.

    yeah. so, don't study

So, I passed my economics exam.

Strange. I said. how could it be that I have passed this test without even taking it? then I remembered all the studying I attempted to do and realized I must have. After many hours of torturous therapy I managed to remember the exam in question, plus a few childhood trauma regarding aliens.

The strike that has been going on at school, to me has been a mild inconvenience and slightly amusing. They shut down the tim hortons that was in my building, and the A&W is closed so I must venture across the street for hamburgers, or check out the other coffee Establishments for coffee. The place is being maintained by the administration, so it is not falling apart just yet. So, I don’t really care too much.

However for one of our exams they could not get the exam printed for the students. odd. So we had to take the exam while reading the questions off the overhead projector.

We did not have to write the exam. If we did not the weight of the exam would fall on the final, so a number of people left.

However I just wrote the exam.

one could almost consider this more fair, as everyone had the same amount of time on every question. yeah well I did not bother to read the questions the second time. once I make my dot. my dot stays. even if I know the answer is wrong.

The marks were posted online. No hundreds this time. but I got 93.33% which is higher then my 83.33 of last time. this is odd because on my online quizey dohickeys I had 53,83,83. which is much lower then the exam. If I don’t get 103.33 on my final I shall be annoyed.

    Apparently studying does work?

    no.

    it does not.

    so don’t study

it artificially inflates your marks and will get you fired the second week of your job.

    if you even get one.

    studying bad.

    more on that later. possibly

    So, I bought a tablet

About a month ago I felt the need for another computational device. I figured I would get something for school. something that would be light enough to carry around but powerful enough to actually accomplish something.

At some point in time I probably realized that this was a pointless endeavor. however I was obsessed. and as obsessions go, this one was rather mild so I let it play out.

My first thought was a PDA, But I was unsure if it would accomplish what I wanted. Originally I wanted simply to be able to connect to  a wireless network (such as the one at the university) and connect to my home computer. Looking at modern PDAs however revealed that none of them have the screen resolution to display anything but a postage stamp size area of my computer screen. The two PDAs with a resolution that came anywhere near what I wanted was the Dell Axim x51v and the IPAQ H4700. however at $300+ and a low resolution I moved on.

I did not really want a laptop, and I thought that tablets were kind of cool, so I started looking for one of those.

Among the candidates that existed were the M1200, M1300, M1400, TC1000 and the TC1100.

After many agonizing hours of research and many days of futile bidding I finally purchased an M1400 by Motion Computing. The stock photo is below.

However here is when the fun started. It took many weeks to arrive. well that was not so much fun as rather boring. however when it finally did arrive nothing really worked. I found out they had the wrong drivers installed.  After many hours of messing around I finally got most everything to work. However the USB, Firewire, Bluetooth, Fingerprint Scanner, and ALS probably will never work.

    yay.

Having no USB meant I could not use the keyboard. This was not a horrible problem (who needs a keyboard?) but I felt the need to fix this problem as well.

I purchased a combination USB/Firewire PCMCIA card. It came with some interesting cables that I have no idea what are for. However every time I inserted the card into the computer the computer froze. It was rather interesting really as it more or less saved the state and if I were to remove the card the computer would continue with no symptoms but lost time. I tested the card on various office computers only to note much more "destructive" consequences.

    so I took it apart.

    the pcmcia card that is.

is that white paste supposed to be there?

I started looking for a new card. but being Sunday not much was open and was forced to purchase an overpriced card at London drugs (3 times overpriced to be exact). however in the good news department this card worked and now I have usb. yay.

I am pretty sure the person at staples had no idea what I was talking about.

However all in all. I have a tablet pc.

I had a hard time attempting to define "tablet pc" to my room mate. but it is essentially a laptop without a keyboard. what that means is that it needs some other form of input, this is usually a digital pen type thingy. which is so cool.

    you should buy one.
